Lynyrd Skynyrd & Foreigner Performed Live at the New Morton Amp
Two legendary rock bands preserving a legacy made for one unimaginable night as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Foreigner rolled into Morton Amphitheater on their “Double Trouble Double Vision Tour” on August 14—a celebration of the classics in both familiar and refreshed forms.
Foreigner proved that its latest evolution is more than a personnel change, with new frontman Luis Maldonado bringing a youthful energy and powerful vocal presence to the stage while new guitarist John Roth added another dimension to the band’s sound, all wrapped in a revamped production and stage setup that gave the show a fresh visual identity. The setlist followed suit, mixing the expected staples with welcome additions such as “Say You Will” and “Break It Up,” reminders that there is still plenty of depth to explore in the band’s catalog.
Then came Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose unmistakable sound and enduring legacy remain inseparable from the devoted, almost cult-like following that has carried the band across generations. “Tuesday’s Gone” carried particular weight as a tribute to those who came before, while “Simple Man” and “Sweet Home Alabama” demonstrated the timeless songwriting at the heart of the Skynyrd mystique before “Free Bird” brought the evening to its towering conclusion.
Throughout it all, Johnny Van Zant openly expressing Christian faith added the perfect dimension to the performance, grounding the celebration of Skynyrd’s history in something deeply personal and spiritual. More than five decades into the journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to prove that some music doesn’t simply survive—it becomes part of people’s lives.
