The Bacon Brothers Performed Live at VooDoo Lounge in Kansas City, MO on July 14, 2018

Captivating country and folk rock duo The Bacon Brothers—Michael and Kevin Bacon—performed live in concert at VooDoo Lounge inside of Harrah’s North Kansas City Hotel & Casino on July 14, 2018. Both are notable men in Hollywood, Michael an Emmy Award-winning composer and Kevin an award-winning actor, but you would hardly know of their fame in concert. Once they hit the stage, they are all about the music and all about delivering and entertaining with their unprecedented flavor of rock.

The Bacon Brothers have performed together almost all of their lives, but they officially began recording and touring together in 1995. Their set featured nearly all original tunes highlighting those from their recently released self-titled album. A grand plethora of instruments filled the stage with both spending time on the acoustic guitar, Kevin also on the ukulele, bongo drums and harmonica and Michael on the electric guitar and even the cello. The backing band was nothing short of extraordinaire though either as it was made up of Paul Guzzone (bass), Joe Mennonna (keyboard/saxophone/accordion), Frank Vilardi (drums) and Tim Quick (guitar).

Kevin did share one story from Hollywood in ties to the new album. He reminisced about writing the song “Beneath Perfection” for a movie in which he was to star by the same name. He had written the song as the title also well described how he felt at the time, and he fantasized about the movie popularizing his music. Instead, however, that never came to fruition as the film was renamed “Tremors” (1990). But, he dug that tune out of the vault for the new record and fans can get a little taste of its history. Originally written with a folk-oriented feel though, he transformed it to more of a psychedelic rock song.

It was a magnificent evening filled with true musicianship. Excellent to see as well that no seasoned hits were needed and that musical talent alone could draw a wondrous crowd. The Bacon Brothers have a strong Kansas City-based following already, but it undoubtedly multiplied after their spirited performance. The merch table was totally abuzz immediately following the encore, which saw a cover of Tom Petty’s “Don’t Do Me Like That” with our very own Brody Buster joining on stage plus “Live With the Lie” from their debut album. You can bet next time they swing through town that we will have even more of a packed house and a whole new legion of incurable fans will show up in their Bacon Bros. t-shirt.
