With all of its original members reunited, London’s profoundly influential new wave band Culture Club performed live at the Muriel Kauffman Theatre inside the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts last night as a part of its world tour celebrating 35 years. Fronted by the flamboyant Boy George, the group formed in 1981 and was an instant international success upon the release of its debut album, “Kissing to Be Clever” (1982). Culture Club released three major records before departing in 1986. Although the members met again a handful of times throughout their span, this tour is the first time in more than 14 years that…
Iconic British new wave and synthpop band Duran Duran performed live in front of 7,000 infatuated fans at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City last night in support of its recent album, “Paper Gods” (2015). After a rousing 30-minute DJ set by Los Angeles producer Tokimonsta, Nile Rodgers took to the stage with his band CHIC. The disco-funk group delivered an electrifying opening performance, one that was certainly worthy of headlining its own tour. The crowd packed out early in anticipation. It was a extraordinary and awe-inspiring moment to glance back from the pit and witness the entire house juking and jiving. From…
Indeed, it is very possible that Starlight Theatre’s best lineup of ’80s artists is upon us this summer. From synthpop to classic rock to country music, this season is jam packed with names that etched the decade in stone. Week after week throughout Fall, the venue delivered jaw-dropping announcements of must-see concerts. Kicking off four months of pure exhilaration in prime fashion were the openers of last night’s “Last Summer on Earth” tour. This year on the Barenaked Ladies’ annual excursion were two British electro-legends, Howard Jones and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Howard Jones opened the evening by serving up…
Canadian heavy metal singer and original Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach performed live in front of a vigorous crowd at Knuckleheads Saloon last night in support of his highly anticipated autobiography “18 And Life on Skid Row” (2016). It was a celebration marking 30 years of him rocking his fans to the core, and both the old and young came out to relive their heyday or catch a glimpse of the artist for the very first time. After a ravishing display by up-and-coming Finnish glam band Santa Cruz, Bach hit the stage for a two-part set that gave his faithful every bit of the rush they showed…
Improvisational multi-genre artist Bruce Hornsby was live last night at Knuckleheads Saloon in the East Bottoms of Kansas City with his band The Noisemakers in support of the upcoming album “Rehab Reunion” (2016). Although largely known a for his incomparable piano playing, the new release features Hornsby performing solely on the dulcimer as seen in the photo highlight. The six-man group wowed the crowd with a 2-hour set that showcased a variety of instruments, including a violin and even a frottoir. It was an all-out jam session, a sentimental evening that the crowd felt some sort exclusivity in witnessing. Ear-to-ear smiles not…
