The “Urban Cowboy” Reunion Show Returned to Ameristar Casino in Kansas City on July 12, 2019

Country and pop music crossover artists Mickey Gilley & Johnny Lee returned to Star Pavilion inside of Ameristar Casino in Kansas City with their “Urban Cowboy” reunion show on July 12, 2019. The two legends were prominently featured in the film 1980 film by the same name starring John Travolta where Gilley’s nightclub in Pasadena, TX was the main location. They kicked off the tour in early 2018 and came to Ameristar exactly one year prior with their load of hits.

With backing from the Urban Cowboy band, the show features three separate sets—Johnny Lee opens the show followed by Mickey Gilley and then a joint performance of songs from the movie. Johnny’s set included ’80s hits such as “Pickin’ Up Strangers,” “One in a Million,” “Hey Bartender” and “Cherokee Fiddle” while Mickey’s set included hits from the decade like “Paradise Tonight,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Candy Man” and “True Love Ways.” Together, they danced covered tunes from other artists in the soundtrack plus their own hits, Johnny’s “Lookin’ for Love” and Gilley’s “Stand By Me” to close out the night.

It was a heartfelt evening as is every time the two legends grace the stage. Awe-inspired fans of every era packed out Star Pavilion yet once again, a rare time at the venue where even young children were present. The Urban Cowboy reunion show is of the utmost honored shows to experience, and fortunate for us that we have multiple opportunities to do so at Ameristar Casino. If you missed the show or wish to relive it time and time again, check out the Mickey Gilley Theatre calendar for Branson dates and tickets in September through December this year.
